Dubai: Solar powered hotel enforces local sustainability commitment

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) will open its second Hotel Indigo in the UAE in The Sustainable City, which is currently under construction in Dubai.

IHG signed a management agreement with Diamond Developers – the owners of The Sustainable City – at this week’s Arabian Travel Market to operate the 170-room property when it opens in 2017.

As IHG’s boutique brand, each Hotel Indigo property is designed to reflect the local neighbourhood it is located in. From the design of the building to the hotel’s artwork and locally-inspired menus, each property takes inspiration from its surroundings, meaning no two properties are the same.

Pascal Gauvin, chief operating officer, India, Middle East & Africa, IHG, said the property will be Dubai’s first sustainable integrated development, was exactly what they were looking for in developing its second Hotel Indigo in the city.

“The owners, the Diamond Group, are developing a city which is all based on sustainability of water, energy, waste management, and even economic sustainability. They were looking for a hotel operator and a brand, so we are developing Hotel Indigo because it’s our lifestyle boutique hotel. Every hotel is unique, there is no one that is the same. We felt this [sustainability] story is absolutely in line with what we are looking for,” Gauvin told Arabian Business.

As well as recycling and using solar energy, he said the hotel will source produce from the organic farm in the development.
“The hotel will also be sustainable, in waste management, energy, with solar panels, and water management. All our water will be treated and recycled. There will be a greenfield within Sustainable City where they will grow their vegetables and herbs,” he added.

The hotel will be a Net Zero energy building, meaning 100 percent of its energy needs will be met by solar power. The Hotel Indigo will also have a solar-powered shuttle bus service to bring hotel guests to Downtown Dubai.

The Sustainable City complex will include residences, a green school, a community centre, an equestrian centre, and solar covered parking lots, as well as tourist attractions such as a Planetarium and a grass Amphitheatre for hosting events.
IHG currently has 18 hotels open in the UAE, with another 10 hotels due to open in the next three to five years.

Hotel Indigo Dubai The Sustainable City will be the second Hotel Indigo in the UAE and third in the Middle East, joining the recently signed Hotel Indigo Dubai Business Bay and Hotel Indigo Riyadh King Abdullah Financial District in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which is set to open in 2016.

The company launched the first hotel under the Hotel Indigo brand in South East Asia earlier this year with Hotel Indigo Bangkok Wireless Road in Thailand.

IHG has 79 properties open across five brands in the Middle East: InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and Staybridge Suites, with an additional 26 hotels due to open over the next three to five years.
