New SGBC board to accelerate green building agenda

Singapore, 1 April 2015 – More industry-relevant initiatives and programmes are in the pipeline, pledged Mr. Chia Ngiang Hong (Group General Manager, City Developments Limited) as he took over the reins of leadership for the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) from Er. Ng Eng Kiong (Managing Director, Squire Mech Pte Ltd).

Announced during SGBC’s Annual General Meeting on 26 March 2015, the newly-minted SGBC Board (2015/17) led by Mr. Chia as the President was formally introduced to about 100 SGBC corporate members and representatives from Singapore’s building and construction industry. Comprising a good mix of individuals from each crucial pillar of the construction sector value chain, the new Board is well-poised to accelerate the awareness and adoption of green building practices.

Mr. Chia himself has over 30 years of real estate experience in Singapore and the region, having spent the better part of his fruitful career with CDL, responsible for the company’s enduring emphasis on environmental sustainability across all its properties and business divisions. Under his leadership, CDL has amassed numerous local and global accolades as testament to its steadfast support to sustainability, with the company’s expanding portfolio of green buildings further cementing CDL’s position as a beacon of corporate sustainability.

“Although much has been accomplished for green building in recent years, more still can be done,” says Mr. Chia, “The industry will continue to undergo paradigm shifts in response to trends and broad changes in the business landscape, therefore, SGBC must evolve as well to keep pace with the dynamic industry in order to stay relevant to our member companies.”

A slew of new initiatives and projects are slated for 2015, chief of which is the publication of a green building product focused magazine that touches on the real-world project applications of products/services certified by SGBC’s Singapore Green Building Product/ Service (SGBP/SGBS) certification scheme. SGBC will also continue to develop and organise industry-relevant seminars and workshops to build capability as well as work closely with regional and international partners to further the green building cause.

With their years of knowledge, expertise and experience in their respective fields, the SGBC Board will provide guidance and leadership to the SGBC to bring the myriad of green building initiatives and programmes to fruition.

“With the excellent groundwork laid down by our predecessors, my SGBC Board colleagues and I will certainly have large shoes to fill,” Mr. Chia adds, “However, with the new Board’s diverse range of expertise and years of relevant industry experience, I am very confident that we will be able to build upon the brilliant foundation that has been set in place, to further drive the green building agenda for the betterment of the building and construction industry.”

SGBC Board Members are elected for a two-year term by a vote of SGBC’s Member companies, with ballots mailed out in January 2015 and returned in March 2015. The new SGBC Board’s term will begin from March 2015 to March 2017.
