Anhui modernized buildings covering an area of nearly 3 million square meters, leading China in promoting green buildings, according to the provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.

To modernize the building trade is to erect structures in a sustainable way instead of traditional ones that are resource-intensive and environmentally-irresponsible. In China, the green building practice remains at an early stage.

The province stands out by introducing the practice among government-funded houses. To date, nearly 3 million square meters of affordable homes have been built using process that is environment-friendly and resource-efficient throughout their life-cycle.

Hefei, the capital of Anhui, was selected by the Ministry of Housing and Urban -Rural Development to carry out a national program for modernizing the housing industry on a trial basis. With 25 buildings covering a total area of 338,000 square meters under construction, the project in its Shushan district, aimed at providing decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, is the biggest building-modernized project in the country.

In addition to the provincial capital, Bengbu and Chuzhou are piloting the green building program at the provincial level. Industrial leaders like Sievert expanded their reaches into the province, helping the industry grow towards agglomeration in those cities.
