Singapore: New Sengkang Mall Earns BCA Green Mark Before Grand Opening

SINGAPORE – A new mall in Sengkang has been recognised for its environmentally friendly features, even before it opens for business at the end of the year.

The Seletar Mall, which is near Fernvale LRT station, earned a Green Mark (Gold) award from the Building & Construction Authority (BCA) last week.

A joint venture development by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and United Engineers, the mall was recognised for its energy and water efficiency, among other things.

It boasts a skylight above the atrium that lets in natural light and minimises the need for artificial lighting during the day.

It also has a presence-detection system in toilets and staircases, thus lowering energy consumption from lighting.

The shopping centre has energy-efficient air-conditioning systems and escalators with a “sleep mode” that slow down automatically when not in use, said SPH in a statement.

The mall also provides meters to monitor the major water usage system – enabling better control of water usage and for assessing possible locations of leakage.

Rainwater is collected to irrigate the plants, reducing water consumption.

The shopping centre also has ultraviolet emitters for energy efficiency and better indoor air quality. They reportedly help to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in the mall.
