India: Anani Riverside, the First Local Mall to be Platinum-rated for Energy Conservation


KOLKATA: Avani Riverside Mall became the first in the country to bag the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) platinum award for energy conservation. The building had last year won the National Award for Energy Conservation from the President of India in general category.

“The mall uses energy-efficient lighting system and water-cooled air-conditioning system which has resulted in a reduction of 23% energy consumption. With ultra low-flow hand flush at washrooms, there has been a 40% reduction in water consumption. It is the only mall as per our database to get the platinum rating,” said Anand M, principal counselor at IGBC. “They also have an organic waste management system in place where the excess from cafeterias etc are used as manure for landscape,” he added.

IGBC is a part of CII-Godrej Green Business Centre, which is actively involved in promoting the Green Building movement in India. The council is represented by all stakeholders of construction industry comprising of corporate, and nodal agencies, architects, product manufacturers, institutions, etc.

The mall authorities are of course ecstatic. ” That is the highest rating ever awarded in the entire history of CII-IGBC.This m akes Avani Riverside the most environment-friendly mall building of the country surpassing over 500 malls,” they said.
