Singapore Green Building Week 2013 Puts Spotlight on the Need for Collaboration to “Live Green, Build Green”

SINGAPORE – 11 September 2013 – The fifth Singapore Green Building Week (SGBW) 2013 once again brings together two world-class green building events, the International Green Building Conference (IGBC) 2013 and Build Eco Xpo (BEX) Asia 2013 in a single location. Organised by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) of Singapore in partnership with Reed Exhibitions and the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC), these anchor events have attracted more than 10,000 participants from over 35 countries. Held at the Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre from 11 to 13 September 2013, IGBC 2013 and BEX Asia 2013 have come together to provide a one-stop, international platform for global green building experts and industry players to meet and collaborate on future green building solutions.

2. “Climate change is a global threat that affects every one of us regardless of where we reside, and requires a collective, collaborative effort for it to be effectively countered,” said Dr. John Keung, CEO, BCA. “With IGBC 2013, BCA is pleased to once again bring together global green building experts, built environment industry leaders, policy-makers and academics to exchange knowledge, share ideas, and explore opportunities on how we can all work as one to create a greener, more sustainable built environment for all.”

3. “The green movement in the region is quickly gaining traction; the rise of green awareness and consciousness, and the proliferation of accessible green technologies for the building and construction sector has given rise to a high demand for green solutions,” said Mr Paul Beh, President – Asia-Pacific, Reed Exhibitions. “Understanding the evolving landscape, BEX Asia has worked to ensure that we stay at the forefront of these changing times. This is an exciting year for BEX Asia. The strong support and complementary nature of the partner events has allowed BEX to offer not only greater breadth, but also greater depth in content,” he added.
IGBC 2013 Event Highlights

4. Themed “Live Green, Build Green”, the third IGBC has drawn over 1,000 participants from more than 35 countries. This year’s conference welcomes a congregation of global thought leaders and sustainability experts that include:
Mr Harvey Bernstein, Vice-President for Industry Insights and Alliances, McGraw-Hill Construction.

Ms Jane Henley, CEO, World Green Building Council.

Mr Zachary Tofias, Director, C40 Sustainable Communities Initiative and the Climate Positive Development Program

Mr Thomas Heatherwick, Founder & Principal, Heatherwick Studio

Mr Martin Reuter, Ingenhoven Architects.

5. Building on the need for greater industry collaboration and action, IGBC 2013 will bring together some 250 guests comprising CEOs and senior management of major developers, building owners, valuers, leasing executives and building tenants, in an exclusive Breakfast Talk for CEOs on 13 September 2013. Themed the “Value of Green to Corporations”, this session will see leaders from Daikin Industries Ltd, Keppel REIT Management Limited, Lend Lease Asia and NetApp share their experience with leveraging environmental sustainability as a way to drive core business strategies and innovation throughout the organisation, and how it has facilitated new approaches to talent retention and employee well-being, corporate social responsibility and new business models.

6. In line with the greater emphasis on stakeholder engagement on sustainability, this year’s event will also see the inauguration of BCA’s Green Tenant Pledge, an initiative inviting multinational and local companies to participate in a pledge to commit to “greening” their existing premises and extended offices or premises. Companies including Dairy Farm Singapore, NTUC Fairprice, and VISA Worldwide will be taking up this pledge come 13 September. At the same time, developers including Lend Lease, City Developments Ltd and Mapletree Investments will be committing to a Green Partnership, which will help enhance the environmental performance of tenanted areas, thereby contributing to improving efficiency and consumption of buildings as a whole.

7. BCA will also present highlights of its 3rd Green Building Masterplan currently under preparation and outline its vision for Singapore as a global leader in green buildings with special expertise in the tropics and sub-tropics. The 3rd Green Building Masterplan will see BCA intensifying efforts to develop industry skills, capabilities, and technology adoption; grooming of green specialists; and working on industry standards for zero and net-positive energy buildings and low energy high rise buildings. The Masterplan calls for greater collaboration and engagement with stakeholders and encourage greater community involvement in sustainable development. It will see greater emphasis on monitoring and verification of building energy performance, carbon emissions reduction strategies, and look to improve the quality of the built environment and occupant well-being.

8. This year’s BEX Asia is held just as there is a growing level of both awareness and interest in sustainability. Visitors and participants at BEX Asia 2013 can expect to see a myriad of green solutions and also a more vigorous exchange of green ideas. Alongside the rising demand for green technologies, BEX Asia has yet again established itself as the region’s choice business event with more than 300 exhibiting companies showcasing the largest range of products and services in the industry this year.

9. Joining the comprehensive list of returning exhibitors, some of the new firms this year include Camfil (Singapore), Daisen (Italy), Hoffsetter (Switzerland), Pinnacle LGS (UK), PT. Duta Sarana Perkasa (Indonesia) and Stonrich (Singapore). BEX Asia 2013 also welcomes a new participating country in JETRO Japan.

10. A key highlight of BEX Asia 2013 is its feature area, the Green View. A new platform for industry leaders to share trailblazing green ideas, solutions and trends, it will put the spotlight on seven professionals and experienced practitioners. Over the next three days, these speakers will be sharing their green ideals and philosophies with industry players. These guest speakers include:

Dr Ken Yeang, Principal and Co-founder, T.R. Hamzah & Yeang Sdn. Bhd

Ms Christina Ng, Senior Associate Director – Facility Management, Colliers International

Mr Andrew J Lee, Regional General Manager, Hunter Douglas

Ms Ayca Ozcanlar, Architect, Arup Facade Engineering Singapore

Mr Philip Hannaford, Director, HASSELL Studio

Ms Sarah Greenlees, Architect, Arkitrek

Ms Jaye Tan, Sustainable Building Design Architect, DP Architects

11. Beyond these sharing sessions, the Green View also offers visitors the opportunity to try out back-to-basics traditional weaving techniques and structure building. These workshops, organised by Arkitrek, emphasise the values of sustainability, community engagement and resource conservation.

12. Into its sixth year, BEX Asia will be showing an even greater commitment in greening the show itself. Apart from taking green initiatives in conducting the event, from cutting down on printed hand-outs to using recyclable and reusable materials on the show floor, Reed Exhibitions is also working closely with partners to ensure sustainable efforts in areas of energy consumption, green procurement, resource management amongst others. Reed Exhibitions will be compiling a post event sustainability report to review its green efforts.
