New SGBC President and Board elected

A new Board has been elected for 2013-2015 at Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC), with Mr. Ng Eng Kiong as new President. He is taking over from Mr. Tai Lee Siang, who will serve as the Immediate Past President for the coming two years.

Mr. Ng is a keen advocate of continuous learning and the promotion of environmental sustainability in his firm Squire Mech Pte Ltd, as well as in the industry. “SGBC members span the entire value chain of the building and construction industry. However, as the leader of the green movement in Singapore, we must strive to have all within our industry represented, both the big players and smaller companies, in order to accomplish green progress in all types of building projects. New key players in the green building movement, such as landscape designers and contractors, will need to also come on board as urban greenery is now gaining popularity in buildings and its environment, and amongst building occupants. These are going to be some of our focus areas in the coming years.”

Mr. Ng held several senior management positions during his time with the Housing and Development Board (HDB) from 1974 to 1989. As Managing Director at Squire Mech Pte Ltd, Mr. Ng was instrumental in leading the firm to be one of the leading mechanical and electrical engineering consulting firm with numerous projects, clinching Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark Awards, and achieving the BCA Built Environment Leadership 2009, Gold Class.

Mr. Ng has been an active member in the Electrical and Electronic Standards Committee of SPRING and has also been involved in the drafting of several Singapore Standard Specifications and Codes of Practice.

For his dedicated efforts in improving productivity of construction project sites, Mr. Ng has been recognized as a BCA Certified Construction Productivity Professional (Honorary). He served as a member of the BCA Construction Excellence Awards Evaluation Committee from 2011 to 2013, and the BCA Construction Productivity Awards Assessment Committee in 2012 and 2013.

Mr. Ng Eng Kiong will assume the new Board position on 21 March, 2013. “Despite the forecast of an economic slowdown, I’m confident SGBC will keep adding value to our members as well as thrive in our work of establishing a green building baseline. We aim to demonstrate the business case for green buildings and promote that green building not only makes a good investment, but is the only path ahead for the generations to come.”
