Thailand: nation looks to introduce green building certification and codes

$13 billion over two decades may be needed by Thailand’s energy efficiency and green construction sector, this conclusion comes after a report on energy efficiency spending between 2003 and 2011.

Currently the sector is anticipating the positive effect of energy efficiency, green building standards and certification which will drive growth in the industry.

The bright outlook comes after the figures released by Thailand’s Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE) revealed that $7 billion has been invested in energy efficiency from 2003 to 2011, showing the increasing awareness of energy saving sustainability and environmental concerns across the country.

A creditable building certification process, national building codes and incentives are all thought to be key to the continuing growth of energy efficiency investments. The standards for certification, coding and incentives are being drawn up by a coalition of businesses, government and the financial sector.

Currently the Thai Ministry of Energy’s (MOE) have a revolving loan program, which has been successful and will continue, but the growth will come from a deeper penetration into the market of advanced green building solutions, which will bring substantial energy conservation gains.
