First WELL Certified™ Project in Asia and Long-Term Commitments to the WELL Building Standard™ Signify Continued Expansion
New York, NY (October 6, 2016) – Just two years after the public release of v1 of the WELL Building Standard™ (WELL), the International WELL Building Institute™ (IWBI™) reports tremendous industry growth in China’s healthy building sector through its WELL Certification program. With over 13 million square feet and 50 projects now registered or certified under WELL in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, key milestones in the market include:
“China has been one of our fastest-growing markets for WELL Certification, and it has been tremendously exciting to see such enthusiasm and support for developing buildings that positively impact human health and wellness in China and beyond,” said IWBI Founder Paul Scialla.
In September alone, six major projects across different typologies registered to pursue WELL Certification in China, totaling 2.2 million square feet. These projects represent a broad range of high-level developments pursuing innovative ways to improve the quality of built environments. Among these is China Merchants Property Development, a subsidiary of China Merchants Group, which has committed to certify its flagship project, China Merchants Central Times, a 23-story office building with 250,499 square feet in Shenzhen. The project is being developed by China Merchant Shekou Holdings. One of the earliest real estate developers in China, China Merchant Property Development has assets totaling US $23 billion with projects in 30 major cities across China. Other recently registered projects include Xuhui Riverside Tower 1 and Tower 2 in Shanghai’s Xuhui District, the SCGWujian Office Tower in Shanghai, and two projects from Sino-Ocean Group in Hangzhou – the Grand Canal Place and International Center.
WELL is an evidence and performance-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring features that impact human health and well-being in the built environment, through air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind. WELL complements green building rating programs such as LEED, Three Star and BREEAM, and is third-party certified by Green Business Certification, Inc.—the same body that administers 10+ billion square feet of LEED buildings globally. To date, WELL has enrolled more than 270 building projects in 24 countries.
WELL achievements in the Chinese market will be commemorated at a dedicated session today at Greenbuild 2016 in Los Angeles in the IWBI Lounge (booth 929). For more information, please visit www.wellcertified.com/greenbuild.

About the WELL Building Standard™
The WELL Building Standard™ (WELL) is a performance-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring features of the built environment that impact the health and well-being of the people who live, work, and learn in the buildings. WELL focuses on seven categories of building performance: air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind. Pioneered by Delos, the WELL Building Standard is grounded in evidence-based medical research that demonstrates the connection between the buildings where we spend more than 90 percent of our time and health and wellness impacts on us as occupants. The WELL Building Standard is administered by the International WELL Building Institute™ and third-party certified by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI). www.wellcertified.com
