Singapore : NTU receives numerous BCA Green Mark Platinum awards

Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has given their BCA Green Mark PlatinumSTAR Champion award to Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore). The award recognizes outstanding commitment to sustainable design.

Sustainability is one of the core values of NTU. The university has bold plans to become one of the world’s most eco-friendly university campuses. The University has been on a rapid drive to green all its new campus buildings, as well as to retrofit the existing ones. They aim to reach the high BCA Green Mark standards, explained Professor Freddy Boey.

The university achieved 51 Green Mark Platinum awards. The awards are the national benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings. Combined, the 51 award-winning buildings generate 39,000 MWh of energy savings; the equivalent of about 8,000 4-room HDB flats for a year.

Professor Freddy Boey, NTU Provost said that these BCA Green Mark PlatinumSTAR Champion award prove the campus’ efforts and commitment towards sustainability. He believes that the success of NTU’s sustainability research, and the recognition from Singapore and the world show that they are producing real results. “It also demonstrates the dedication of our professors, staff and students to environmental stewardship.”

NTU’s upcoming project, the Academic Block North, will be completed with an eco-feature centric design. Beside its use of eco-friendly LED lighting, the building will have windows that take advantage of natural wind and shade. A demand-driven ventilation system will also be incorporated to maximise energy savings.

Other projects at the NTU Novena campus, such as the Clinical Sciences Buildings, also implemented green building technologies. These include energy efficiency features such as high-performance glass windows which maximise daylight yet attract less heat. The campus will also be fitted with energy-efficient air conditioning and recycling facilities.
