Aimed in promoting energy efficiency in the building sector, Green Business Certification, Inc. (GBCI) and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) Ministry of Power signed an agreement to run and implement energy efficiency programmes and policies of the government. By 2030, India commits on reducing carbon emission intensity by 33-35%.
The energy efficiency programmes include: capacity building and training, creating a credible data base of building energy data, educating the public on green building practices, and promoting market transformation tools such as ECBC, LEED, EDGE, PEER which can further advance energy savings in buildings.
According to Mahesh Ramanujam, COO of U.S. GBC and GBCI president, energy efficiency is a key focus for Prime Minister Narendra Modi who had asked India’s government body to identify and implement transformative ideas which can bolster India’s green building sector – be it new or existing buildings.
Ajay Mathur, Director General of BEE also added that as the infrastructure sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in the Indian economy, great emphasis on promoting energy efficiency and energy conservation in various sectors should be considered as great potential in energy savings show promising growth.
