China : Flower building blooms in Shanghai

With a total of 110,000 sq m of offices, 47,000 sq m of retail space, and 55,000 sq m of parking, the Flower Building – a flower-shaped landmark at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport – designed by MVRDV aims to receive a 3-star Green Building Label, the best energy performance rating in China. The first energy-efficient office building in the masterplan by MVRD has been completed, and will now be followed by  nine other office buildings due in early 2016.

The building features energy-efficient practices such as a self shading form, the cantilevered, and is complimented by a facade with smaller openings on the upper floors aiming to reduce energy consumption. The white facade, extremely light but highly-insulated GRC panels, offers a subtle, shifting grid which expands as it reaches the ground to become more public and open to passers-by and contracts as it reaches up. This feature greatly reduces the need for AC.

High performance insulation, optimized building forms, shaded spaces, natural ventilation, rainwater collection, permeable road surfaces, links to public transport, a reduction in the urban heat island effect, and green roof installation are all included in the sustainable building’s features.
