GREENSHIP Neighborhood (NH 1.0) is launched

Green Building Council Indonesia is an independent non-profit organization whose primary purpose to encourage the building construction practice, implementation and maintenance become sustainable and in accordance with the principle of green building.

Green Building Council Indonesia is committed to draw up a rating system in accordance with Indonesian local conditions and situation, to determine the techniques that can be applied in Indonesia, while adjusting with International standards. GREENSHIP rating tools can be used as a tool for the performers of the building industry to implement best practices and to achieve measurable standards that can be understood by the public and building users. The standard to be achieved is the realization of environmentally friendly green building concept since planning, construction, and operation until daily maintenance.

Six year after GREENSHIP rating tool for the building released, we proudly launch a GREENSHIP Neighborhood (NH) rating tool Version 1.0; this rating tools spirit behind to spread and inspire the sustainable neighborhood implementation.

The benefits that can be gained by implementing GREENSHIP Neighborhood:

  • Maintaining the environmental harmony and balance, and improving the quality of healthy neighborhood
  • Minimizing the impact of development on the environment
  • Improving the quality of the microclimate
  • Applying the principle of connectivity, ease of way-finding, safety, and comfort on pedestrian track
  • Maintaining a balance between the need and availability of future resources

7 (Seven) Green aspect in GREENSHIP Neighborhood (NH) rating tool Version 1.0 is:

  • Land Ecological Enhancement (LEE)

Regional development undertaken must be able to support the sustainability of the neighborhood and the space quality without reducing the neighborhood ecology quality. The provision of Green Open Space (GOS) is necessary to create a healthy environment for community; to improve the quality of the microclimate around the area and reduce the Urban Heat Island (UHI). These efforts to conserve biodiversity in forest or city park which also necessary for the survival of native species (flora and fauna) as power support of urban environment.

  • Movement and Connectivity (MAC)

The conduct of the accessibility study, for people, goods and vehicles movement, are becoming the main requirements to anticipate congestion issues that commonly occur in urban areas. This category also encourages the implementation of lives and livelihoods in people movement. Things that are emphasized are making pedestrians as priority, to give universal accessibility, to provide infrastructure and facilities, as well as various appropriate public facilities, and support the mobility of the surrounding community. Connectivity with all facilities and infrastructure provides convenience and flexibility so that energy and costs efficiency achieved and encourage
healthy lifestyles for the community and reduce the dependence on the use of private vehicle.

  • Water Management and Conservation (WMC)

This category is intended to raise awareness of the importance of knowing the potential water resources, the need for clean water and its management. All three are essential to maintain Balance between the need and availability in the future. The efforts of management and water conservation in the neighborhood as follows: waste water management of neighborhood, using the alternative water sources such as rain water or treating river water, integrated rain water run-off management systems to reduce burden onto urban drainage and conservation of the water buffer zone.

  • Solid Waste and Materials (SWM)

Solid waste management in the neighborhood to be important in order to continue the spirit of solid waste management on the buildings and homes. Provision of facilities and integrated management in the neighborhood can be connecting thread and ensure the environmentally friendly waste management.

In addition to solid waste management, this category also lifted the issue of road material infrastructure selection that used. Use of domestic, recycling, and re-used material in road infrastructure, to reduce the carbon footprint and encourage economic growth in Indonesia

  •  Community Welfare Strategy (CWS)

The community is an important stakeholder in the development of the neighborhood; the community is a part of the neighborhood. This category encourages efforts to improve the community welfare which is relevant with business development plan of neighborhood, facilitate so that people can interact and do the activities, as well as
the implementation of a secure neighborhood from crime and natural disasters.

Beside the promotion of sustainable lifestyles to public by socializing or involving the community in the program can create dynamic social interaction as social capital. The area that retains the character of local culture also should be appreciated for keeping the hallmark of the neighborhood and preserve cultural diversity in Indonesia.

  •  Buildings and Energy (BAE)

This category gives an appreciation of the neighborhood that encourages: the implementation of green building in its neighborhood as an integrated element of green building, energy savings in the neighborhood, the use of alternative energy, as well as the reduction of light and sound pollution.

  • Innovations and Future Development (IFD)

To ensure the implementation of the sustainable concept in the future neighborhood, the sustainable direction is needed as guidance to implement the environmentally friendly neighborhood. The existence of innovations to develop environmental, social, and economic function in neighborhood also appreciated in this category.

This rating tool is expected to encourage the performers of industry and stakeholder to apply the concept of sustainability in our neighborhood. GREENSHIP Neighborhood rating tool can be immediately applied and useful for the community and the sustainability of environment.
