On October 21 2015, Nanjing University (NJU) of the People’s Republic of China and Syracuse University in New York, USA, signed a cooperative agreement to establish the International Center for Green Buildings and the Urban Environment. The goal of the new partnership is to promote cooperation in environmental and energy research and education. The agreement was signed by officials from the two universities at an event held at the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems (SyracuseCoE).
Given that both countries account for 43 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions, signing the cooperative agreement will help organize a new framework for reducing these emissions. Sherburne Abbott, vice president for sustainability initiatives at Syracuse University said that some of the most vanguard work in the world in the area of Green Buildings is being conducted in China. The mission of the center is to advance interdisciplinary research and education through international collaboration while also achieving broader impact of the two universities related to energy, environment and health in buildings and urban communities.
Both universities are internationally known for their contributions to the field of sustainability. This is demonstrated by their strong commitment to facilitate world-class international academic collaborations by working together to develop innovative new solutions for global challenges.
