China : Sustainable business park at Shanghai Honqiao airport

Shanghai’s  Honqiao airport is set to have a sustainable business park encompassing a total of 110,000 mof offices, 47,000 m2 of retail space, and 55,000 m2 of parking. The flower shaped landmark was designed by Netherland based architecture firm MVRDV for Sincere Property Group. The building will receive a 3-star Green Building Label, the best energy performance rating available in China, and will be expected to be completed in early 2016. While the first phase of the energy-efficient office building is now complete, a further nine office buildings will follow in early 2016.

Co-founder and principal architect Jacob van Rijs of MVRDV describes the second phase of The Flower Building, located near the entrance to a new metro station, to be more of a “flexible, more generic office space with a village-like urban plan that offers intimacy and friendly outdoor spaces”.

The building merges the tops of four towers to create a shaded and intimate plaza in between. The building’s ground floor will feature retail space, while its top floor features connections between the four towers so that the building can be used flexibly by a one or more different tenants. On top of that, the building includes high performance insulation, optimised building forms, shaded spaces, natural ventilation, rainwater collection, permeable road surfaces, links to public transport and a reduction in the urban heat island effect. All 10 buildings will also offer green roofs.

To reduce energy consumption, a façade with smaller openings on the upper floors are complimented by a self-shading form, leading to the building’s 3-star energy rating. The white façade, made up of extremely light but highly-insulated GRC panels, offers a subtle, shifting grid which expands as it reaches the ground to become more public and open to passers-by – henceforth little need for air conditioning is required.
