In accordance to reducing environmental impact, developers have come up with various initiatives to encourage the construction sector to go ‘green’. While conventional buildings account for immense energy consumption and contribute to a high rank of carbon dioxide emissions, there is growing awareness to help address city issues through sustainable construction.
Wood, as a construction material, has gained favor as a sustainable choice. Over the years, green building has come to mean that resource-efficient processes are used throughout a building’s life cycle, from siting all the way through to end-of-life deconstruction. With a carbon footprint that’s 75% less than that of concrete or steel, wood plays a major role in the sustainable cycle.
Will wood be a top contender as a material for green buildings?
Wood lets us reduce, reuse and recycle. Excess wood can be taken to recovery centers for recycling and let other builders use it for their next project. Unlike many other building material such steel, for instance, wood it renewable. It does not deplete the earth out of its natural resources, and can be grown and harvested over and over again.
Some might say that wood is not a suitable building material as it may easily fall victim to fire damage. Cross Laminated Timber or CLT, however, can be an alternate wood material because it is more like concrete than wood. Harvested from sustainably managed forests, CLT is designed to make highly durable long lasting wood panels that exhibit excellent fire resistance. In addition, timber is a very attractive option as a energy sufficient, sustainable building material when compared to other woods due to the fact that timber uses less water and has a lower carbon footprint.
