Sri Lanka : Green building concept to advance eco-friendly environment

Sri Lanka construction industry contributes to 40 percent of Lanka’s green environment destruction.

“By promoting the green building concept we could reduce that amount to some extent,” Ceylon Institute of Builders’ President, Dr. Rohan Karunaratne said.

“Sri Lanka could boast of having the top three best outdoor environments in the world.

Unfortunately, destruction is happening in the outdoor environment at a rate of 200 percent for a year. By promoting the green building concept we could reduce this by 40 percent,”Dr. Karunaratne said at the opening ceremony of the Construction Expo 2015-Sri Lanka’s biggest building, interior and lifestyle exhibition organized by the Ceylon Institute of Builders (CIOB) and Lanka Exhibition and Conference Services last Friday at the BMICH.

The exhibition consisting over 200 local and foreign stalls that feature facilities in construction and building industry concluded yesterday. He said in 2013, we started with one green building desk. Today it had a pavilion for green business and hope by 2017, the whole exhibition will be featuring green building products as the industry’s concern on the environmental effects and interests are growing fast, he said.
